Snow fell heaviest in Greenville, SC on Sunday during predawn hours, quickly covering Main St. after each pass from a plow. The wind howled between the city buildings. As denizens emerged to view the wonderland, a stinging sleet joined the mix, forcing some to walk backwards or sideways to shield themselves.

Dog walkers and coffee drinkers came first. The snow ball fighters and sledders, many armed with cardboard boxes, followed. A man and his son bombed the small hill at Falls Park on an oil drip pan, one end curled up by hand. A young girl on a more traditional plastic sled shot the gap between the stairs and the bridge crossing the Reedy.

Most in the crowd screamed and ran after her.

“I thought I was about to have to get wet,” said a twenty-something standing behind me, after the sledder came to a stop a few feet from the water’s edge, “I thought I was gonna have to jump in.”

Which brings up to an important lesson.

Teach your kids and younger siblings how to bail, especially when you’re sledding on a hill that sends revelers across a river bridge.
