Kinetic Derby returns

“Terribly disappointed with our performance — too slow,” says Ryan McCue, leader of the Win in Rome team at the 2022 West Columbia Kinetic Derby. “Our first race we had under inflated tires and it was a huge problem. We need bigger diameter, thinner tires. We need to focus on our bearings and axels more.”

Veteran participants in the event, the team rebuilt their 2018 Irish Spring soapbox for this year’s entry, a Roman chariot. Their original plan for 2022 was a duck hunt theme.

“But the backyard creative juices flowed and this is what we came up with,” says McCue.

After a two year hiatus due to the pandemic, this derby didn’t include a parade but added an obstacle course with “Jello,” soap and shower challenges.
